Look At You, Look At Me / Dave Mason

デイヴ・メイスンがトラフィックを辞めてソロデビューしたアルバム『Alone Together』の最後に収められた曲だが、今回は76年のライブ　『Certified Live』に収められたバージョン。それまで海賊版が横行してたのかどうか知らないが『公認』と名付けられたライブだが、日本盤では『ライヴ～情念～』という2枚組だ。
デイヴ・メイスンは、イギリスのトラフィックというバンドの結成メンバーで、セカンドアルバムまで参加している。トラフィック自体はメイスンが辞めた後の方が売れたらしいが、個人的にはあまり興味がない。

さて、メイスンはジミ・ヘンドリックスの『Electric Ladyland』にも参加しているみたいだが､ジミ・ヘンもカヴァーしているボブ・ディランの名曲「All Along the Watchtower（見張り塔からずっと）」なども自らカバーしている。この『Certified Live』でも演奏している。
そんな彼が1970年に出した『Alone Together』はレオン・ラッセルだのリタ・クーリッジだの結構、豪華なメンバーで作られ、ドラムは前出のトラフィックのドラマー、ジム・キャパルディが叩いている。そしてこの『Look At You, Look At Me』は、彼との共作なのだ。

ライブの歌詞はスタジオ録音と順番が少し違う。スタジオ盤は､青文字が先に歌われるが､ライブは赤が先だ。

スタジオ盤より5分ほど長いこのライブは、テンポアップしロック感が増している。ぼくはメイスンの曲は必ずしも全部好きなわけではなく（大概どのアーティストもそうなのだが）、フォークっぽいメジャーコードの曲はほとんど興味がない。
その中で、この曲を始め、数曲は相当聴き倒している。そしてこの2枚組ライブはそんなぼくでも捨て曲がない。レコードで言うとA面がロック、B面がフォークC面がブルースロック、D面が能天気なロック（勝手なぼくの分類）になっているのだが、マーク・フィニガンの『Goin’ Down Slow』から
この『Look At You, Look At Me』への流れが特に好きだ。

またこの曲でのフィニガンのピアノもいい。12分が短い！
デイヴ・メイスンの声は渋く、しかし意外に伸びがあって素晴らしい。
しかしそれより何より、デイヴ・メイソンはギタリストなんだなぁ。ぼくにとってはクラプトンなんかよりずっと好きなのだ！なんでクラプトンなのかって？だって少し似てるから（あ、あくまでこれも個人の感想）。
