最近なぜか、今更ながらThe Ides Of Marchの「Vehicle」にはまっている。
The Ides Of Marchは、60年代に結成されたバンドで、1970年にこの「Vehicle」で大ヒットを飛ばして有名になっている。このバンド名を調べてみると、ソーントン・ワイルダーという人の書いた「三月十五日」という作品が出てくる。この3月15日というのは、実はシーザーの暗殺された日であるらしく、「ides」というのはローマの暦で3，5，7，10月の15日、残りの月は13日をいうのだそうだ。だから、「Ides Of March」は、3月15日という邦訳になる。「Ides of February」だったら、2月13日ということか、ちょっと面白い。
だからバンド名が小説なのか、そもそも3月15日という名前を付けたかったのかはよく分からない。
いわゆるブラスロック、シカゴみたいなやつだが、この曲しか知らない。
「Vehicle」は乗り物のことだが、歌詞の内容は女の子をナンパする歌だ。だがかっこいい。
オフィシャルサイト を見ると、まだ活動しているらしい。まあ、60歳は過ぎているに違いない、皆さん。いきなりかかるのがVehicleなので、まあ、最大のヒットなのだろう。いわゆる一発屋というのかも知れない。
でも、この機会にサイトにある音を聞いてみたら悪くない。リストを見ると「Eye of the Tiger」のカバーなんかもやっていたりする。まあ、オフィシャルに載っているベストが出たら考えてもいいかな。
このVehicleという曲も、いろいろカバーされている。 最近ではBo Biceという人がカバーしているのがYouTubeに出ていた。他にもJo Lyn Ternerやシャーリー・バッシーまで歌っている。
